The Athabasca Glacier on July 16, 2024, when John Pomeroy's research team visited to carry out measurements. The darkened surface is speeding up glacier melt by absorbing more heat than a clean, white surface would.

Alberta’s famed glaciers are shrinking every year as global temperatures soar. Now, scientists worry the soot and ash from wildfires like the one that devastated Jasper could speed the rate of glacial melt, endangering water resources and hydroelectric power generation.
