As the Great Lakes warm, researchers say more winter science is crucial

Ice collects along the shore of Lake Michigan as temperatures were in the single-digits for most of the day on February 17, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois. Temperatures are expected to remain below normal in the city for the remainder of the week.

As it stands, almost all monitoring is done during the spring, summer and early fall months when there's easier access to research vessels and equipment like buoys.
