A bait site used by the researchers to collect bear DNA samples. The samples would be collected from the site by researchers afterwards and sent to a lab. Researchers counted tens of thousands of samples this way to come up with population estimates.

The black bear population in Ontario has seen significant declines in a few areas of the province, according to a population survey conducted by government researchers, raising concerns about the health of the bears and the impact of hunting them.
